Helpful Tips:  Care & Cleaning
of  Window Blinds

Once you have purchased and installed the perfect window blinds for your home, you want to keep them looking great for years to come.  To do this, it’s necessary to occasionally clean your blinds.  It is recommended by most manufactures of window blinds that you clean your blinds at least once a month.  The surfaces of most window blind slats are often quite smooth, which makes cleaning them easy.  However, when cleaning your blinds, make sure that you use a soft dusting cloth to dust them with, or if using your vacuum to clean your blinds, make sure to use the brush attachment so you do not scratch the finish of your window blinds.  By regularly dusting or vacuuming your blinds you can save both time and money.

Vacuming Your Window Blinds:

Make sure to use the brush/dust head attachment.

First tilt slats up, then down, but make sure that you do not close the slates entirely so that you can clean the entire area of the slates.

Dusting Your Window Blinds:

There are several products currently on the market that are made for dusting blinds that you can purchase, or you can use a soft clean clothe.  As when vacuuming your blinds, when dusting you want to simply tile the slats up, gently wipe then off, then tilt the blinds down and wipe then again.  Make sure that you do not close the window blinds entirely.

If needed, there are several chemical cleaners that you can use.  However, before cleaning your entire blind, we strongly advise that you test an area that is not noticeable to make sure that the cleaner will not harm your blinds.  Some cleaners will harm vinyl and wood composite window blinds, while other chemical cleaners will remove finishes on wooden window blinds.  For these reasons—we strongly suggest that you carefully read the cleaners to make sure you can use them on the type of window blind you have and then for added care—test an area first.

Washing Your Window Blinds:

Yes it is possible to wash your PVC, aluminum, and certain types of wood composite window blinds!   All you need is a damp cloth and warm water mixed with a mild detergent to clean your blinds.  Before you start, however please make sure that you protect your flooring from the excess water as well as your windowsills.  When washing your window blinds, tilt the slats up first and wipe the window blinds clean with the damp cloth, then tilt the window blind slats down and wash them, making sure that when you finish that you wipe off all excess water.

Another method of washing your PVC, aluminum, and some wood composite window blinds is to take them down from the windows, then place them in a tub of warm mild soapy water.  However you must make sure that you rinse all the soap off of the blinds and to carefully wipe them dry.  If you can not completely dry the blinds, then you should allow your window blinds to air dry completely.

Having Your Window Blinds Professional Cleaned:

Having your window blinds professional cleaned is something that you should only need to have done occasionally.  Many cleaning services provide ultrasonic cleaning for a deep cleaning.  As with any service, check in your area for companies that provide this service.  When you have your blinds ultrasonically cleaned, they will look like new.
