companies with approximately 65 manufacturing
and 99 assembly plants and marketing

When World War II broke out in 1940, Henry Sonnenberg moved
from Rotterdam, Netherlands to the United
States, where he founded the Douglas Machinery
Company. In
1946, Henry Sonnenberg entered into a joint
venture with Joe Douglas, which led to the
production of lightweight aluminum slats for
Venetian window blinds. This venture soon
became the Hunter Douglas Corporation.
In 1956, the United States business was sold and moved to
Montreal, Canada.
The company then began concentrating on

In 1969, the Hunter Douglas Group went public.
Then in 1971, the company relocated its
headquarters to Rotterdam.
