The
Key to Optimal Light Control
Light control is much more than just reducing the
amount of glare from your work area,
television, or that comes through your windows.
Light control is about reducing the
amount of harmful ultra violet rays that enter
your home.
Ultra violet rays are what fade and harm
fabrics, such as your upholstery, rugs, as well
as your furnishings, hardwood flooring, and
artwork that are inside of your home. To help combat the effects of harmful UV rays, proper window
coverings can successfully be used.
When shopping for light controlling window
coverings, you should look for these options:
Window treatments that are opaque can help
control light.
However, keep in mind that UV rays over
time will eventually break down most types of
fabrics. For
this reason consider using non-fabric shade
next to the glass.
If you are purchasing custom made
draperies consider using linings that resist or
reduce UV damage.
For rooms that need to be completely darkened,
such as a bedroom, you can purchase
light-blocking roller shades, blinds, and shade
blinds as well as draperies.
These products will state that they are
“room darkening.”
To keep out direct sunlight tilt all of your
vertical blinds.
This will allow in light as well as
allowing you a view while reducing the amount
of UV rays that enter the room.
Such treatments as bamboo, matchstick and other
natural blinds will filter out light while
cutting down on glare.
As will Non-sheer cellular shades.
Many styles of natural blinds and
cellular shades can be purchased with an
exterior lining for privacy.
If you have any rooms that
receive extremely strong sunlight, such as
south facing windows, you may want to consider
window tinting.
Window film is applied directly to the
windows and can reduce the effects of harmful
UV rays by as much as 75%.
Window film is available in several
degrees of tinting.
